About Stara Planina
Stara planina, or some of them more famous by the name Balkan Mountain, is a mountain system that has a length of 530 km. One part of this mountain range represents a natural border between Bulgaria and Serbia, while in our country there is only a small, western part of the mountain. It extends from the Black Sea to the Vrška Čuk, near Zaječar, and the Serbian part of Stara planina extends to several municipalities, which are: Dimitrovgrad, Pirot, Knjaževac and Zaječar.
The highest peaks of the Old Mountain
The highest point of this mountain is Botev Vrh (peak) with its height of 2,376 m, located within the national park “Central Balkan” in Bulgaria. In Serbia, the highest peak is Midjor, with a slightly lower altitude of 2,169 m above sea level, while the lowest point is located near the exit from the Prlitsokg Valley stream and is 132 m.
Climate on Stara Planina
If we consider the position of the mountain and its altitude, it can be said that the moderate continental climate prevails on Stara planina. Almost five months a year, it is covered with snow cover, at an altitude of between 1,100 and 1,900 meters. Considering how long it is covered with snow, Stara planina has an ideal surface and conditions for skiing, and the coldest month is January.
Nature Park on Stara Planina
The area of Stara Planina was declared a Nature Park in 1997. and represents a natural good that is of great importance. It has an area of 142,219 hectares and 64 acres. Its value is reflected in the diverse flora and fauna that is formed on its surface.
Nature Park of Stara Planina is characteristic for its biological diversity. The home has as many as 1200 different types of plants, of which over 100 are strictly protected species, and 50 on the list of endangered European flora. As far as fauna is concerned, its biggest fortune is in butterflies, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and especially birds and mammals.
Skiing on Stara Planina
The ski center of Stara planina is located at an altitude of 1,723 m, and its longest track has a length of 1,155 m. On Stara Planina there is also the only ski gondola in our country, which Stara Planina connects with the ski track Konjarnik.
Ski gondola has a maximum capacity of 2,400 skiers per hour, which has 40 cabins, while four-lane ski lift also has a capacity of 2,400 skiers per hour. Artificial snow tracking is provided on slightly more than 4 km of trails, out of a total of 13 km, and therefore skiers can ski even when there is no natural snow.
Skiing is available to skiers throughout the winter season, and if you belong to a group of people who are not interested in skiing, you can enjoy active vacation in Stara Planina in many other ways no matter how old you are.
The villages surrounding the Old Mountain, or located at its base, are full of hospitable people who will always welcome you with rich dining and national specialties. The specialty that is characteristic for this area is “belmuž” – a dish of corn flour and cheese, which will be recommended to you by all locals.
